Kashi Vishwanath Templeकाशी विश्वनाथ मंदिर

The jyotirlinga at the heart of the city. The present temple was built by Ahilyabai Holkar in 1780; its gold-plated spire was gifted by Maharaja Ranjit Singh in 1835. Since 2021 the corridor opens the temple directly to the river at Lalita Ghat.

Kashi is called the city of Shiva, and this is where the city keeps him. Pilgrims who have walked for weeks end their journey here with a single glimpse of the linga.

Tips

  • Phones, bags and leather are not allowed inside; lockers are available near the corridor gates.
  • Queues are shortest in the first hour after opening.

How to reach

  • 2.9 km from Varanasi Junction (Cantt) station in a straight line
  • 21.9 km from Lal Bahadur Shastri Airport in a straight line
  • 0.4 km from Godowlia crossing, where cars stop for the old city in a straight line

Straight-line distances; by road through the lanes it is further.
