The lanes behind it hold the Kanchi math and Kanchi Kamakoti temple, the Kerala, Sankara and Sringeri maths, and Tamil families who have lived here for generations; the poet Subramania Bharati's family home stands on the ghat. At the top of the steps the Panchayati Juna Akhara of Dashnami sadhus keeps the Bade Hanuman shrine and the Rameshvara linga.
The Rameshvara linga, counted among Kashi's twelve jyotirlingas, stands for the great shrine at Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu and gave the ghat its old name. By oral tradition Tulsidas founded the Hanuman shrine in the early 17th century, from which the ghat takes its present name; Ruru Bhairav, one of the eight Bhairavs of Kashi, has his shrine in the lanes here.
