Good to know

  • This is a working shrine and graveyard: dress modestly, cover your head, and ask before photographing graves or people.
  • During Muharram the dargah is a place of mourning; come with quiet respect or visit at another time.

The Persian poet and scholar Shaikh Muhammad Ali Hazin, who came to India from Iran and died in Banaras in 1766, is buried here. So is the shehnai maestro Ustad Bismillah Khan, laid to rest with state honours in August 2006 under a neem tree, at the spot where he played mourning tunes every Muharram.

Year after year in the month of Muharram, Bismillah Khan sat here playing nauha, the laments for the martyrs of Karbala, on his shehnai. When he died, his shehnai was buried with him.
