Kaal Bhairav Templeकाल भैरव मंदिर

Bhairav is the kotwal, the police chief of Kashi: nothing is said to happen in the city without his leave. The present temple in Visheshwarganj dates from the 17th century. Pilgrims tie a black thread from the temple around the wrist for protection.

Tips

  • Newcomers to the city traditionally pay respects here before Vishwanath.
  • The silver-faced image is glimpsed through a small window; queues move quickly.

How to reach

  • 2.1 km from Varanasi Junction (Cantt) station in a straight line
  • 21 km from Lal Bahadur Shastri Airport in a straight line
