Good to know

  • Combine it with Kaal Bhairav: both stand in the same old-city lanes north of Maidagin and are easiest reached on foot or by e-rickshaw.
  • Bring a small bottle if you wish to take water from the well; ask the priests where it is drawn today.
  • Mondays draw devotees who come for a vow of 40 consecutive Mondays; come early to avoid the queue.

The present building dates from the 18th century; the smaller shrines inside are held to be far older. Beside the linga is an old well whose water, the district administration notes, is said to be a mixture of several underground streams and good against disease.

Tradition holds that Dhanvantari, physician of the gods, poured his medicines into the well, so devotees sprinkle or carry home its water. Recitation of the Mahamrityunjaya mantra goes on through the day, and a sava lakh (125,000) japa here is believed to remove the fear of untimely death.
