Scindia Ghatसिंधिया घाट

Rebuilt around 1830 by the Scindias of Gwalior, the ghat proved too heavy for the soft bank and part of it slid into the river. The result is the most photographed temple in Kashi: Ratneshwar Mahadev, leaning at the water's edge and standing in the Ganga for much of the year. The lanes above are the Siddha Kshetra, where tradition places the birth of Agni, the god of fire.

Tips

  • Directly north of Manikarnika Ghat; every Dashashwamedh–Panchganga boat ride passes it.
  • On foot, allow fifteen minutes through the lanes from Dashashwamedh.

How to reach

  • 3.2 km from Varanasi Junction (Cantt) station in a straight line
  • 22.1 km from Lal Bahadur Shastri Airport in a straight line
  • 0.9 km from Godowlia crossing, where cars stop for the old city in a straight line

Straight-line distances; by road through the lanes it is further.
