Manikarnika Ghatमणिकर्णिका घाट

The great cremation ghat, where the fires are said never to have gone out. In the city's belief, to die in Kashi and be cremated here is to be released from rebirth. It is a place of grief and of faith, watched quietly and from a distance.

Tips

  • Do not photograph the pyres or the mourners.
  • Decline offers of a 'special view' for money; the families do not benefit.
