Kabir Chaura Mathकबीर चौरा मठ
The seat of the Kabir Panth, in the neighbourhood where the weaver-poet Kabir lived and sang in the 15th century. The math keeps his loom, his sandals and a samadhi shrine, and still prints his couplets that belong to no single religion.
'Moko kahan dhundhe re bande, main to tere paas mein' — why search for me, friend, when I am right beside you. Kabir mocked temple and mosque alike and both claim him.
Tips
- Ask to see the loom and the manuscript room.
- Lahartara, where Kabir was found as a baby by a pond, is a separate site 5 km west.
