Chet Singh Ghatचेत सिंह घाट
A small sandstone fort rises straight from the steps: the riverside palace of Raja Chet Singh of Banaras. In August 1781 the Governor-General Warren Hastings tried to arrest him here, the city rose, and the Raja escaped down the wall to a boat. The uprising was crushed within weeks, but the fort still stands on the quiet stretch between Assi and Harishchandra ghats.

Tips
- Ten minutes on foot north of Assi Ghat; from a boat, the round bastions are easy to pick out.
- The ghat was called Shivala Ghat before it took the Raja's name; the Shivala temple quarter is just behind it.
How to reach
- 4 km from Varanasi Junction (Cantt) station in a straight line
- 22.9 km from Lal Bahadur Shastri Airport in a straight line
- 1.6 km from Godowlia crossing, where cars stop for the old city in a straight line
Straight-line distances; by road through the lanes it is further.
