Good to know

  • Pair it with Kaal Bhairav for darshan of both forms, but they are in different parts of the city: take an e-rickshaw between Visheshwarganj and Kamachha.
  • Many devotees feed the temple dogs milk or biscuits as an offering to Bhairav's vahana.
  • Krodhan (Adi) Bhairav, one of the eight Bhairavs of Kashi, is in the same Kamachha neighbourhood beside the Kamakhya temple.

Kaal Bhairav in Visheshwarganj guards the city as its kotwal; here the same fierce aspect of Shiva is worshipped as a boy, tender and formidable at once. A lamp is kept burning without break, and dogs, Bhairav's vahana, wait around the shrine.

Local lore says Bhairav took the form of a child to slay a demon who could be killed only by a child, and so became a protector of Kashi. Devotees believe the oil of the ever-burning lamp heals wounds and bites, and the deity's birthday is kept with a 56-dish bhog and the feeding of 1,008 children.
