Timings and fees are not confirmed from an official source; check before you go.

Good to know

  • Walk up from Tulsi Ghat, or come by lane from Assi; it pairs well with Tulsi Ghat and Assi.
  • On Lolark Shashthi police barricade about 2 km around the Tulsi gate with separate entry and exit; the queue can take many hours. Unless you are bathing, see the fair from outside.
  • Do not photograph people bathing; the ritual is a private prayer for a child.

Steps run down about 15 metres on three sides; the fourth is an arched well-shaft facing east towards the Ganga. The Lolarkeshwar shrine stands beside it. Quiet most days, it fills once a year for Lolark Shashthi, when lakhs of devotees come to bathe.

The Kashi Khanda (chapter 46) tells of the Sun settling in Kashi as Lolarka and praises worship here on Sundays. On Lolark Shashthi, the sixth day of the bright half of Bhadrapada, couples bathe at dawn praying for a child, leaving behind a fruit or vegetable they then give up eating.
