Once a year the quiet stepwell of Lolarka, the Sun of Kashi, fills with lakhs of bathers.
Couples praying for a child bathe at dawn, leave a fruit or vegetable in the water and give up eating it. Queues start the night before; police barricade about 2 km around the Tulsi gate, with separate entry and exit, and NDRF teams stand by in the kund.
