Its large linga, about 3.5 feet high, is held to be swayambhu, self-manifested, and the temple building is believed to date from the 18th century. Devotees come every day, and in Sawan the queues for jalabhishek stretch into the lane.

Devotees believe the linga grows by the size of one til, a sesame seed, every year; that belief gives the temple its name. Tradition also holds that Mata Sharda stayed here for some days.
