Good to know

  • This is where Kabir was found; where he lived, worked and is remembered with his loom is Kabir Chaura Math, about 4 km east. Seeing both tells the whole story.
  • Parts of the pond outside the Dham's land are neglected; the temple side is the place to visit.
  • Leave footwear at the temple entrance and keep voices low during satsang.

Kabir Panthis call it his prakatya sthal, the place where he appeared rather than was born. About 8 of the pond's original 17 acres belong to the Sadguru Kabir Prakatya Dham, which keeps a temple and satsang hall by the water and has been building a larger memorial; part of the rest is protected by the UP archaeology directorate.

Kabir Panthis hold that Kabir was not born of a mother but appeared on a lotus in the pond, and that Neeru and Neema, coming to bathe, carried him home to the weavers' quarter that is now Kabir Chaura.
