Good to know

  • By road from Varanasi, take the Prayagraj highway (the old GT Road) and turn left after Gopiganj; the temple is about 12 km off the highway towards the Ganga.
  • The district lists Bhadohi (about 40 km) and Mirzapur (about 44 km) as the nearest railway stations, so most visitors come by car.
  • Vindhyachal is about 45 km away; the two can be combined in one long day.

The present complex was completed in 1990. Its landmark is a towering Hanuman statue, 110 feet high by the district administration's count.

Sita is said to have lived here in the hermitage of the sage Valmiki, where her sons Luv and Kush captured Rama's ashvamedha horse and held off his warriors. When Rama himself came, Sita asked her mother, the earth, to take her back, and the earth received her.
