Banaras Hindu University, founded by Madan Mohan Malaviya in 1916, is one of Asia's largest residential campuses. At its centre the Birla-built New Vishwanath Temple (1966) is open to all; Bharat Kala Bhavan holds miniature paintings, textiles and sculpture from across north India.

Tips

  • The temple has no entry restrictions and the Gita is carved on its walls.
  • Cycle-rickshaws run the long avenues inside the campus.
