Every year on Magh Purnima, followers of Guru Ravidas Ji from Punjab, other states and abroad gather at his birthplace, the gold-domed Shri Guru Ravidas Janam Asthan Mandir at Seer Govardhanpur, just south-east of BHU in Varanasi. In 2027 the Jayanti falls on Saturday, 20 February, and marks the 650th birth anniversary. This guide covers the date, what happens during the mela, the trains that bring the sangat from Punjab, and how to reach the temple when the roads close. The 2027 programme has not been announced yet, so where we describe a programme we say which year it is from.

Ravidas Jayanti 2027 date: Saturday 20 February, the 650th

Guru Ravidas Jayanti is kept on Magh Purnima, the full moon of the month of Magh, so the date moves between late January and February. For Varanasi, Drik Panchang puts Guru Ravidas Jayanti 2027 on Saturday, 20 February. The Purnima tithi runs from 7:59 AM on 20 February to 4:52 AM on 21 February. The central government's list of restricted holidays for 2027 (DoPT, issued 16 July 2026) also gives Guru Ravidas's Birthday as Saturday, 20 February. In 2026 the Jayanti fell on 1 February.

2027 marks the 650th birth anniversary. At a satsang in Seer Govardhanpur in February 2026, the Shri Guru Ravidas Janm Sthan Mandir Public Charitable Trust released a logo for the 650th Parkash Purab on 20 February 2027. It called on the sangat in India and abroad to come to Kashi under the slogan 'Chalo Banaras Sadh-Sangat Ji', and began a recitation of the Amritbani 650 times. The Punjab government is marking the anniversary with a year of events from February 2026 to February 2027, including a pilgrimage for devotees from Punjab to the Janam Asthan. As of 7 November 2026, no day-by-day programme for the 2027 Jayanti at Seer Govardhanpur had been published.

Where is Guru Ravidas Janmasthan in Varanasi? The temple at Seer Govardhanpur

The Shri Guru Ravidas Janam Asthan Mandir stands on Sant Ravidas Mandir Road in Seer Govardhanpur (also written Sir Gobardhan), about 3.5 km south-east of the main gate of Banaras Hindu University. It is open every day from 6 AM to 9 PM, entry is free, and langar is served through the day. The state's Kashi portal calls it the second Golden Temple of Kashi.

The foundation stone was laid on 14 June 1965 by Sant Hari Dass, under the guidance of Sant Sarwan Dass of Dera Sachkhand Ballan near Jalandhar. Statues of Guru Ravidas Ji and Sant Sarwan Dass were installed in 1974, and the present building was completed in 1994 with donations from devotees in India and abroad. It has a large gold dome and 31 smaller gold-plated domes, and holds more than 200 kg of donated gold, including a gold palki of about 130 kg. The Guru Ravidas Gate on the road to the temple was opened by President K. R. Narayanan in 1998. On 29 January 2010 Sant Niranjan Dass of Dera Ballan announced the Ravidassia religion here, with the Amritbani Guru Ravidass Ji as its scripture.

On 23 February 2024 a new statue of Guru Ravidas was unveiled in the adjoining Ravidas Park, about ₹32 crore of works around the birthplace were opened, and a foundation stone was laid for a Sant Ravidas museum. In February 2026 the trust said the park would be beautified and the museum opened for the 650th year; no opening date has been announced.

What happens at the Jayanti: sangat, kirtan, shobha yatra and langar

The celebration is a mela of about 15 days, with the main programmes on two days around the full moon. Sant Niranjan Dass, the head of Dera Sachkhand Ballan, who also oversees the Janam Asthan in Varanasi, travels to Kashi with the sangat by special train a few days before the Jayanti. Kirtan and devotional gatherings go on through the mela, and for the anniversary year the trust began a 650-fold recitation of the Amritbani in February 2026.

Past years show the usual shape of the days. The 2023 programme had Sant Niranjan Dass reaching Banaras station two days before the Jayanti, inspecting the tent city and langar hall the next morning, and that evening leading a deepdan (lamp offering) with the sangat at Ravidas Park, followed by a discourse at the satsang venue. In 2025 the main shobha yatra started from Jangambari instead of the usual Maidagin and went by Madanpura, Sonarpura, Durgakund and the Ravidas Gate, then through Nagwa and Bhagwanpur to the temple. The 2027 routes and timings have not been announced.

Langar runs without a break. In 2026 ETV Bharat counted more than half a dozen langars, two run by the temple trust and the rest by devotees from Punjab, supplied by more than 100 trucks of provisions. About 5 lakh people a day were eating in the days before the Jayanti, and 15 to 20 lakh a day were expected at the peak. More than 150 tents were put up for pilgrims, and about 5,000 sevadars were at work. Crowd figures vary: Amar Ujala reported about 3 lakh followers in Kashi for the 2025 Jayanti, while ETV Bharat wrote in 2026 that the celebration draws more than 15 lakh people a year, with more than 1,000 NRIs arriving that year.

Special train from Punjab (Begumpura Express) and regular trains

Not officially confirmed — check before you travel

Each year Dera Sachkhand Ballan takes the sangat from Jalandhar to Varanasi on a special train a few days before the Jayanti. Neither the Dera nor Indian Railways had announced a special for 2027 as of 7 November 2026. This is how it ran in recent years:

  • 2023: the Dera head's special from Jalandhar was due at Banaras station two days before the Jayanti, with buses taking pilgrims on to the temple; Amar Ujala reported two more trains, from Jalandhar and Bathinda, due the same day.
  • 2025: on 9 February about 3,000 devotees boarded the special, reported as the Begumpura Express, at Jalandhar City station after Sant Niranjan Dass led a procession from BSF Chowk. The Jayanti was on 12 February.
  • 2026: on 29 January the special left Jalandhar City at 3:40 PM with about 2,200 pilgrims and was due in Kashi on Friday 30 January, two days before the Jayanti.

The Punjab government asked IRCTC on 30 March 2026, and the Centre again in June 2026, for special trains to Seer Govardhanpur for the 650th Parkash Purab; we found no reported decision. Ask the Dera or your local Guru Ravidas sabha about travelling with the sangat.

Two regular trains also link Punjab with Varanasi Junction (Cantt), about 9–11 km from the temple by road. The 12237/12238 Begampura Express runs daily between Varanasi and Jammu Tawi, stopping in Punjab at Pathankot Cantt, Mukerian, Jalandhar Cantt and Ludhiana; despite the name, it is a regular train, not the Dera's special. The 14624/14623, flagged off on 17 July 2026 as the Sant Ravidas Express and shown in enquiry apps as 'S G Varanasi Exp', runs three days a week between Chheharta (Amritsar) and Varanasi via Amritsar, Jalandhar City, Ludhiana, Ambala Cantt and Lucknow. 14624 leaves Chheharta at 2:05 PM on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays and reaches Varanasi at 12:15 PM the next day, so a departure on Wednesday 17 February arrives on Thursday 18 February, and one on Friday 19 February arrives at midday on the Jayanti. Check IRCTC or NTES before you book.

How to reach Seer Govardhanpur from Varanasi Junction, BHU Lanka and the airport

The temple is in the south of the city, beyond BHU, and the usual way in is through Lanka. On ordinary days autos, e-rickshaws and app cabs go right up to it. Approximate road distances:

  • Varanasi Junction (Cantt): about 9–11 km, roughly 25–45 minutes by auto or cab depending on traffic
  • Banaras station (the former Manduadih): about 8 km, the nearest railway station
  • BHU main gate, Lanka: about 3–3.5 km, a short auto or e-rickshaw ride
  • Lal Bahadur Shastri Airport, Babatpur: about 27–32 km, 45 minutes or more by taxi or app cab

On the Jayanti days the roads around the temple close to ordinary traffic, so expect to be dropped short and to walk the last stretch. In 2026 the traffic police ran a 64-hour diversion from the morning of 30 January to midnight on 1 February. No vehicles were allowed from the Bhagwanpur turn towards the temple, traffic from the Ravidas Gate towards Lanka police station was sent to Malviya Gate, vehicles from Ramnagar were kept off the Samne Ghat bridge and sent via Tengra Mod, and buses other than event buses were turned away at the old Ramna police post on NH-19. In 2025 similar closures ran from 3 PM on the Jayanti, 12 February, to 14 February. In both years the plan came out only on the eve or the morning it began, and the 2027 plan has not been issued yet.

Planning your visit: where to stay, langar etiquette and a quieter darshan

Rooms fill early for the Jayanti: in 2023 Amar Ujala reported the lodges and hotels around the temple full two days before. The temple complex has accommodation for pilgrims, and in 2026 more than 150 tents were put up. If you are travelling on your own rather than with the sangat, book a room near BHU, Lanka or Assi well ahead.

Langar is free and open to everyone, in keeping with Guru Ravidas Ji's teaching that caste should not divide people. Sit with the sangat, take only what you will eat, and follow the sevadars' directions. Dress modestly and follow the guidance at the entrance.

For a quieter darshan, come a few days before or after the full moon: the mela lasts about two weeks, and the temple is open all year from 6 AM to 9 PM. BHU and Sant Ravidas Ghat, the southernmost ghat of the city with its memorial park, are close by and fit into the same half-day.
