Varanasi in 2 days: a practical itineraryदो दिन में वाराणसी: एक व्यावहारिक यात्रा योजना

Kashidwar ·

Two days is enough to see Varanasi at its two best hours, dawn and dusk, on the river, and to add Sarnath and the university quarter in the south. This plan follows the site's own two-day itinerary, Kashi and Sarnath, and adds the timings, transport and bookings that make it work. Timings and fares are as of September 2026; check them before you travel.

Where to stay

Where you sleep decides how early your mornings can start. Both days of this plan begin at the river before sunrise, so staying near the ghats saves the most time.

Pick your Sarnath day with care: the Sarnath Museum is closed on Fridays, and the Bharat Kala Bhavan museum at BHU is reported to close on Sundays. A Saturday–Sunday or Monday–Tuesday pair works well for this plan.

  • Assi and Shivala: guesthouses and cafés at the southern end of the ghats; the dawn programme at Assi is at your door, and BHU and Sankat Mochan are close for day two
  • Dashashwamedh, Godowlia and Bengali Tola: in the old city, a short walk from the Vishwanath Dham and the evening aarti; lanes are narrow and cars cannot reach most hotels
  • Cantt, Sigra and Mahmoorganj: larger hotels near Varanasi Junction station, easier for cars and the airport, but 30–60 minutes from the ghats at busy times
  • Sarnath: quiet, with monastery guesthouses and small hotels, but far from the river for a dawn start

Day 1 morning: dawn at Assi, the river, the Vishwanath Dham

Be at Assi Ghat about 45 minutes before sunrise for Subah-e-Banaras, the daily dawn programme of Ganga aarti, Vedic chanting, classical music and yoga. Depending on the season this means arriving between about 04:45 and 05:45.

Around 06:30, take a boat downstream from Assi to Dashashwamedh, about an hour past the main ghats, including Manikarnika. Cremations take place there day and night; watch quietly from the water and do not photograph the pyres or mourners. In January 2025 the municipal corporation fixed per-person boat fares and posted rate lists at the main ghats, for example ₹345 per person from Assi to Namo Ghat. Private rowing boats are priced by the boat and the hour; agree the fare, the route and the time before you step in.

Around 08:00, walk up to the Shri Kashi Vishwanath Dham, which the corridor now opens directly to the river at Lalita Ghat. Phones and bags cannot go into the temple itself; free lockers are available in the Dham's visitor facility centre. For a shorter queue, the temple trust sells Sugam Darshan tickets, listed at ₹300 on its booking portal (as of September 2026), online and at the helpdesk. These tickets are withdrawn on the heaviest days, such as Sawan Mondays.

Day 1 day and evening: the lanes and the Ganga Aarti

After darshan, around 10:00, have kachori-sabzi and jalebi in Kachori Gali, a few minutes from the temple. Then walk the lanes towards Chowk and Thatheri Bazaar, the old brass market, and the silk and sari shops of the old city. Everything here is on foot.

Rest through the hottest part of the day. In the late afternoon, walk the ghats north or south from Dashashwamedh as the light softens, with tea on the steps.

The Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat begins around sunset: roughly 17:45–18:00 in winter and 18:45–19:00 in summer. Arrive 45–60 minutes early for a place on the steps, or watch from a boat moored in front, which boatmen offer at the ghat; agree the price first. After the aarti, tamatar chaat on Dashashwamedh Road or near Godowlia and a kulhad of lassi end the day.

Day 2: Sarnath, then BHU, Sankat Mochan and Durga Kund

Leave by 07:00–07:30 for Sarnath, about 11–15 km from the ghats and 35–60 minutes by auto or cab. The ASI excavated site around the Dhamek Stupa opens at sunrise and costs ₹25 for Indian and SAARC/BIMSTEC visitors and ₹300 for other foreign visitors. The Sarnath Museum, home of the Ashokan lion capital, charges ₹5; its published hours are 09:00 or 10:00 to 17:00, depending on the source, and it is closed on Fridays. Mulagandha Kuti Vihar is free. Allow three to four hours; our Sarnath guide has a stop-by-stop route.

Return to Lanka or Assi for lunch around 12:30. At 15:00, walk into the Banaras Hindu University campus for the New Vishwanath Temple, open to all, and, except on Sundays, the Bharat Kala Bhavan museum; check its hours on the day.

Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple reopens at 15:00 after its midday closure (12:00–15:00) and stays open until 22:30, or midnight on Tuesdays and Saturdays, which are its busiest evenings. Phones and cameras are not allowed inside. Go around 17:00, then walk or take an e-rickshaw to Durga Kund Temple, beside its tank, for dusk around 18:30.

Food stops along the way

Banaras food is eaten on the move, from leaf plates and clay cups. These dishes fit naturally into the route above.

  • Kachori-sabzi and jalebi: breakfast in Kachori Gali after darshan on day 1, or at Lanka on day 2
  • Lassi: thick, topped with malai, in a kulhad; in Kachori Gali or at Lanka
  • Tamatar chaat: the city's own hot, sweet-sour chaat, around Godowlia and Dashashwamedh Road after the aarti
  • Malaiyo: saffron milk foam set in the winter dew; only in the cold months, early in the morning around Chowk and Godowlia
  • Thandai: cold spiced milk around Godowlia; some shops add bhang on festival days, so ask if you do not want it
  • Launglata: a clove-sealed pastry in syrup, at sweet shops in Lanka and Chowk
  • Banarasi paan: after dinner, sweet or plain, from any old-city stall

Getting around

The old city between Godowlia, Dashashwamedh and the Vishwanath Dham is largely closed to cars; e-rickshaws and autos drop you at the edge and the rest is on foot. Along the river, walking the ghats or taking a boat is often quicker than the roads.

For longer hops, such as the ghats to Sarnath or Cantt to Assi, use a reserved auto or an app cab, and agree or check the fare first. Lal Bahadur Shastri Airport at Babatpur is 26 km north-west of the city, so allow 45–75 minutes to the ghats. The Cantt–Godowlia ropeway was still in trials in September 2026 and is not yet an option.

What to book ahead

Most of this plan needs no advance booking, but a few things sell out.

  • Trains and flights: book as early as you can, especially from October to March and around festivals
  • Rooms near the ghats: small guesthouses fill early; for Dev Deepawali, on 24 November 2026, book weeks or months ahead and expect higher prices
  • Sugam Darshan at Kashi Vishwanath: book on the temple trust's official website; tickets may be suspended on peak days
  • Mangala Aarti at Kashi Vishwanath (around 03:00): tickets are limited and sell out on busy days; book through the official website or app
  • Boats on festival evenings: for Dev Deepawali and other big days, fix a boat a day or more ahead with a registered boatman

Around sunset: roughly 17:45–18:00 in winter and 18:45–19:00 in summer. Arrive 45–60 minutes early.

How much is a boat ride in Varanasi?

Rate lists fixed by the municipal corporation are posted at the main ghats (for example ₹345 per person Assi to Namo Ghat, January 2025). Private boats are negotiated; agree the fare first.

How much is Sugam Darshan at Kashi Vishwanath?

₹300 on the temple trust's booking portal (as of September 2026). Book on the trust's official website or at the helpdesk; it is suspended on peak days.
