Mulagandha Kuti Viharमूलगंध कुटी विहार

The modern temple of Sarnath, built by the Maha Bodhi Society in 1931 beside the ruins of the Buddha's own hut. Its walls carry the Japanese painter Kosetsu Nosu's frescoes of the Buddha's life, and a bodhi tree grown from a cutting of the Anuradhapura tree stands outside.

Tips

  • Shoes come off at the door; the frescoes are best seen in morning light.
  • The bell is rung at the evening service; sit at the back and listen.
