Varanasi does not switch off at sunset. The evening begins with the Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh and Assi, continues with the Sapta Rishi and Shringar aartis inside Kashi Vishwanath, and ends in the chaat and chai lanes of Godowlia. This guide lists what runs after dark, when it starts, what it costs and where the limits are.

Evening Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh and Assi

The Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat is held every evening at dusk and lasts about 45 minutes. It is free to watch from the steps or from a boat moored in front of the ghat. The Ganga Seva Nidhi trust organises it; seven priests stand in a row facing the river and offer incense, tiered lamps and camphor flames to conch shells and bells.

The start time follows sunset. Most sources give about 18:00 from October to March and about 19:00 from April to September; one 2026 timing guide lists 17:45 and 18:45. The exact minute is not confirmed, so treat the start as approximate and reach the ghat 30 to 45 minutes early. In winter the steps fill by about 17:15.

Assi Ghat holds a smaller evening aarti at about 18:00 in winter and 19:00 in summer. It is quieter than Dashashwamedh and easier to watch from close up.

Evening boat rides and the 20:30 limit

Watching the aarti from the water is the usual evening boat ride. Boats gather in front of Dashashwamedh about an hour before the start and fares are negotiated on the spot. One 2026 guide gives shared bench seats at Rs 80 to 300 per person depending on demand, private rowboats at about Rs 400 per hour, and larger motor boats upwards of Rs 4,000 at peak hours. Pre-booked private boats with the aarti are advertised at about Rs 3,500 for up to five people.

There is a hard stop. Since May 2024 the Varanasi Water Police, with the boatmen's agreement, prohibit boating on the Ganga after 20:30 for tourist safety. NDRF and Water Police teams patrol and warn boats off the river; violators risk seizure of the boat and an FIR. Plan the ride around the aarti and be back on the ghat before 20:30.

Kashi Vishwanath after dark: Sapta Rishi, Shringar and Shayan aartis

Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple stays open until 23:00, and three of its aartis fall in the evening. The temple's rituals page lists the Sapta Rishi Aarti from 19:00, the Shringar or Bhog Aarti at 21:00 and the Shayan Aarti at 22:30. The temple trust's FAQ gives the Sapta Rishi Aarti as 19:00 to 20:15 and the Night or Shringar Aarti as 21:00 to 22:15; the rituals page gives 19:00 to 20:30 and 21:00. Take the slot as approximate and arrive before the hour.

Aarti tickets are booked on shrikashivishwanath.org or the temple's app; bookings cannot be cancelled or moved, because the amount counts as a donation. Devotees may enter for the evening aartis from any gate, and general darshan reopens for a short window after the Sapta Rishi Aarti. Phones and cameras are not allowed inside, so use the lockers at the gates.

  • Sapta Rishi Aarti: 19:00 to about 20:15
  • Shringar / Bhog Aarti: 21:00 to about 22:15
  • Shayan Aarti: 22:30; temple closes 23:00

Night food lanes: Godowlia, Kachori Gali, Lanka

After the aarti the crowd moves up to Godowlia. Kashi Chaat Bhandar on Godowlia Chowk serves tamatar chaat, palak papdi chaat and dahi-chutney golgappe until about 22:00. Laxmi Chai Wale on Godowlia Road, known for kulhad chai and malai toast, is listed open until midnight. Deena Chaat Bhandar near Dashashwamedh does chooda matar in winter.

Kachori Gali runs behind the Vishwanath lanes. The Blue Lassi Shop at Kunj Gali has served hand-beaten lassi in kulhads for over 90 years and lists more than 75 flavours; it closes around 21:00, so go before the Sapta Rishi Aarti rather than after. Shree Ji on Dashashwamedh Road serves malaiyyo, the saffron milk froth of cold winter mornings and evenings, and is listed open until 23:00.

Lanka, near BHU and Assi, is the student end of town; its kachori shops are morning places, but paan and chai stalls around Ravidas Gate run until about 23:00. Finish with a Banarasi paan, listed at Rs 20 to 80.

Special nights: Dev Deepawali and the Kartik month

Dev Deepawali falls on Kartik Purnima, the full moon fifteen days after Diwali. In 2026 it is Tuesday 24 November. The ghats are lined with earthen lamps from the river's edge to the top steps; the tradition of lighting lamps on this night at Dashashwamedh Ghat is credited to Pandit Kishori Raman Dubey in 1991. The festival closes a five-day period that begins on Prabodhini Ekadashi.

In 2025 about 25 lakh lamps were lit along the 84 ghats, 15 lakh arranged by the state tourism department and 10 lakh by local committees and residents; the first lamp was lit at Namo Ghat and visitors from more than 40 countries were reported.

Boats for Dev Deepawali are sold weeks ahead at many times the normal fare, and the 20:30 boating limit stands unless the administration announces otherwise for the night; check locally. The ghats are full from late afternoon, so pick one viewing ghat and stay there.

Namo Ghat evenings, cruises and the Sarnath sound and light show

Namo Ghat, the redeveloped Khidkiya Ghat north of Raj Ghat, is open 05:00 to 22:00 with free entry. It has the 25-foot Namaste sculptures, a food court with Banarasi dishes, an open-air theatre for evening events and a jetty. It is lit at night and is the easiest ghat to reach by road, 15 to 30 minutes by auto from Varanasi Junction. Boats from the jetty to the Ganga Aarti are listed at Rs 500 to 5,000 by boat type and run until 20:00.

The Alaknanda cruise is a double-decker vessel with an air-conditioned lower deck. A 2025 listing gives an evening sailing from Ravidas Ghat, reporting 17:00, cruising 17:30 to 19:00 past the 84 ghats with the Dashashwamedh aarti seen from the river, from Rs 1,000 per person. Older listings name Assi Ghat and Rs 750, so the boarding point and fare are not confirmed; book on the operator's site and check the day's departure.

At Sarnath, 10 km north, the sound and light show at Dhamek Stupa narrates the Buddha's life in Amitabh Bachchan's voice. The 2020 launch listing gives entry 17:30 to 18:00, show 18:30 to 19:00, Rs 200 for Indians and Rs 250 for foreigners, tickets at the site gate. Current days and timings are not confirmed; ask at the site before going out.

Manikarnika and Harishchandra at night: a respectful note

Cremations at Manikarnika Ghat continue through the night; the pyres are tended around the clock, every day of the year. The glow is visible from a boat passing on the way to or from the aarti. This is a place of grief, not a sight. Photography and video are prohibited, and taking pictures can lead to confrontation.

If you pass by, keep your distance, keep silent, cover shoulders and legs, and do not eat or smoke. Watching from a boat or the side lanes is accepted; walking among the pyres is not. Requests for wood donations from self-appointed guides are optional, and offers of 'special access' should be declined. The same rules apply at Harishchandra Ghat, the second cremation ghat further south.

Practical and safety points for the night

The main ghats stay busy and reasonably safe until about 22:00 because of the aarti crowds and shops. The narrow lanes of the old city and the quieter ghats empty once the evening ends and are poorly lit; safety guides advise against walking them alone after about 21:00. Lane shops close between 22:00 and 23:00.

Godowlia Chowk is the pickup point for autos and e-rickshaws after the aarti; vehicles do not enter the lanes, so expect a 10 to 15 minute walk from the ghat. Agree the fare before sitting down, or use an app cab for longer distances.

Women travelling alone report persistent touts near the ghats after dark. Safety guides advise planning the evening around the aarti, returning by 21:00, staying near the ghats and moving in a group for later events. Air quality is poor from October to February; carry a mask if you are sensitive, and a warm layer for December and January evenings on the river.

  • Boating on the Ganga stops at 20:30 (Water Police order, May 2024)
  • Kashi Vishwanath closes at 23:00; Shayan Aarti at 22:30
  • Lanes and quiet ghats: avoid walking alone after about 21:00
  • Autos and e-rickshaws wait at Godowlia Chowk, not at the ghats
  • No photography at the cremation ghats; phones not allowed inside the temple sanctum
