How far is Sarnath?
Sarnath is about 8–10 km north-east of central Varanasi. Road distances and times below are approximate and depend heavily on traffic; mornings before 09:00 are usually quickest.
- From Varanasi Junction (Cantt) railway station: about 9–10 km, roughly 25–40 minutes by road
- From Godowlia and the central ghats: about 11–13 km, roughly 35–60 minutes, because the old-city stretch is slow
- From Assi Ghat: about 15 km, roughly 45–60 minutes
- From Lal Bahadur Shastri Airport (Babatpur): roughly 25–30 km, about 45–75 minutes; the airport is 26 km north-west of the city
Auto, e-rickshaw, cab, bus or train

Fares here are not regulated by a published meter tariff, so agree the price before you set off, or book through an app that shows it upfront. The figures are reported, typical ranges as of September 2026, not official rates; check before travel.
Reserved auto-rickshaw: the simplest door-to-door option. A reserved auto from Cantt station has been reported at around ₹150 one way, and from Varanasi City station at around ₹100; from the ghats expect more. Ask the driver to wait for a return trip if you plan only two or three hours at the sites.
Shared auto and e-rickshaw: shared autos run along the Cantt–Pandeypur–Sarnath road and cost far less per seat, but you may need to change vehicles. E-rickshaws suit the last short stretch, for example from Sarnath railway station or the main road to the stupa complex.
App cabs: Uber operates in Varanasi, and Ola and Rapido are also reported to run there, including autos and bikes on Rapido. Availability drops in the old city and at festival times, and drivers sometimes cancel short trips.
City bus: Varanasi City Transport Service runs air-conditioned electric buses, and Sarnath is on the network, but no official route list or fare table for Sarnath could be confirmed online. Ask at the Cantt bus stand for the current route.
Train: Sarnath has its own small railway station (code SRNT) on the North Eastern Railway, about 7–10 km by rail from Varanasi. Local MEMU and passenger trains, and some express trains, stop there, mostly starting from Varanasi City and Varanasi Junction, and the ride takes about 10–30 minutes. Check current timings on the NTES or UTS app before you go; the station is a short e-rickshaw ride from the sites.
Tickets and opening hours

The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) manages the excavated site around the Dhamek Stupa and the Sarnath Museum. The two have separate tickets. Temples run by Buddhist communities, including Mulagandha Kuti Vihar, do not charge entry. Fees and hours are as of September 2026.
- Excavated site (Dhamek Stupa, Dharmarajika Stupa remains, monastery ruins, Ashokan pillar): ₹25 for Indian citizens and visitors from SAARC and BIMSTEC countries; ₹300 for other foreign visitors; free for children up to 15. Open from sunrise to sunset.
- Sarnath Museum: ₹5 per person, children under 15 free. The ASI museum's own site gives 09:00 to 17:00; the Kashi portal gives 10:00 to 17:00. Closed on Fridays. It holds the Lion Capital of Ashoka, India's national emblem.
- Mulagandha Kuti Vihar: no entry ticket. Opening hours are not officially published; the evening chanting, when the relics are shown, is around 18:00.
What to see, and how long to spend
Allow three to four hours for the core sites, or half a day if you add the smaller temples. The Dhamek Stupa, a Gupta-era brick and stone stupa about 43 m high, marks the traditional spot of the first teaching. Around it lie the foundations of monasteries, the Dharmarajika Stupa base and the stump of the Ashokan pillar.
Mulagandha Kuti Vihar, opened by the Maha Bodhi Society in 1931, has frescoes of the Buddha's life by the Japanese painter Kosetsu Nosu, and a bodhi tree grown from a cutting of the tree at Anuradhapura. Monasteries built by Buddhist communities from Thailand, Japan, Tibet, Myanmar and elsewhere line the nearby roads.
Sarnath is also sacred to Jains: nearby Singhpur is venerated as the birthplace of Shreyansanatha, the eleventh Tirthankara, and a Digambara Jain temple stands beside the excavated site. Chaukhandi Stupa, on the approach road about a kilometre south, marks where the Buddha is said to have met his first five companions; its octagonal tower was added under Akbar in 1588.
A suggested half-day route
This order avoids backtracking and puts the museum inside its opening hours. On a Friday, skip the museum and spend longer at the stupa and the monasteries.
- 07:30 Leave Cantt or the ghats by auto or cab
- 08:00–08:15 Stop briefly at Chaukhandi Stupa on the way in
- 08:30 Excavated site and Dhamek Stupa, while it is cool and quiet (about 1–1.5 hours)
- 10:00 Sarnath Museum, opposite the site (about 45 minutes; closed Fridays)
- 11:00 Mulagandha Kuti Vihar and the Jain temple next door
- 11:45 Walk past one or two of the international monasteries
- 12:30 Head back to the city for lunch, or eat near the site
Etiquette at Buddhist sites
Sarnath is a living place of worship as well as a monument, and monks and pilgrims from across Asia come here to pray and meditate.
- Walk around stupas and shrines clockwise, keeping them on your right
- Do not climb or sit on the stupa, the ruins or the pillar railing; the site is protected
- Remove footwear before entering temple halls, and dress with shoulders and knees covered
- Keep your voice low near people who are chanting or meditating
- Do not photograph monks or worshippers at close range without asking; follow any no-photography signs inside temples and the museum
- Do not point your feet towards images of the Buddha when you sit

When to go
October to March is the most comfortable season; summer afternoons are very hot, so go early. Buddha Purnima, the full moon of Vaishakha, brings processions and special ceremonies; in 2027 it falls on 20 May. Crowds and traffic are heavier on that day, so allow extra time.
