A Banarasi saree is silk woven with zari in Varanasi and nearby districts, a craft protected by a GI tag since 2009. A handloom piece takes weeks to weave, and powerloom and art-silk copies are common. This guide covers the main types, approximate prices, how to check what you are buying and where sarees are sold.

What makes a saree Banarasi: the GI tag

'Banaras Brocades and Sarees' is a registered Geographical Indication (GI application No. 99), certified in 2009. The GI covers silk brocades, sarees and dress material woven in Varanasi and neighbouring districts - Chandauli, Bhadohi, Mirzapur and Azamgarh; some sources also list Jaunpur.

The GI filing describes the features that set the craft apart: heavy zari work, compact weaving, finely detailed figures, a metallic sheen, a decorated pallu with cross borders and a border with an inner jhalar. Designs are drawn as a naksha, punched onto cards and woven on looms fitted with a jacquard.

A GI says where and how a product is made. It is not a quality grade and does not by itself guarantee pure silk or a handloom.

Types of Banarasi saree

Banarasi sarees are described two ways: by base fabric and by weaving style. A saree has one of each, for example a katan jangla or an organza cutwork.

  • Katan - plain-woven pure silk made from twisted two-ply mulberry yarn in both warp and weft; soft, lustrous and strong enough to carry heavy zari.
  • Organza (kora) - silk yarn that keeps its natural gum, giving a crisp, sheer fabric.
  • Georgette - highly twisted yarn with a light, flowing drape.
  • Shattir - a lighter base fabric used for simpler, everyday Banarasi designs.
  • Tanchoi - a pattern weave using several coloured wefts, often with little or no zari, giving a tapestry-like surface.
  • Jangla - dense, all-over vines and flowers covering the body of the saree.
  • Jamdani - each motif woven in separately with small shuttles, leaving no loose floats.
  • Cutwork - motifs woven with a continuous extra weft; the floats at the back are cut away. Usually lower in cost.
  • Butidar - small motifs (butis) scattered across the body, in zari or silk.
  • Tissue - zari in the weft gives the whole fabric a metallic sheen.

Banarasi saree price: what to expect

There is no official price list. The bands below are approximate, taken mainly from one retailer's 2026 guide, and vary with silk, zari and design density.

  • Under ₹3,000 (approximate) - almost always powerloom or Banarasi-style art silk, georgette or organza.
  • ₹3,000-8,000 (approximate) - semi-handloom and entry-level handloom in blends or lighter katan.
  • ₹8,000-25,000 (approximate) - handwoven pure katan or kora with zari jaal or buti work.
  • ₹25,000-1,50,000+ (approximate) - bridal katan with dense kadhua weaving and tested zari; can take months on the loom.

A 2021 news report put imitation 'Banarasi' sarees at a couple of thousand rupees, with genuine handloom silk four to five times higher. A master weaver quoted to Outlook Traveller about ₹40,000-50,000 for intricate work with real zari.

How to spot a real Banarasi: handloom, silk and labels

Handloom or powerloom: turn the saree over. Handloom work shows small irregularities on the reverse where motifs and borders were woven by hand; powerloom patterns are perfectly even and repeat mechanically. In cutwork the back floats are trimmed; in kadhua and jamdani each motif is woven in separately, so the back is neat and motifs are rarely packed very close.

  • Silk Mark - launched in 2004 by the Silk Mark Organisation of India under the Central Silk Board. A hologram tag or sewn-in label with a unique number means pure natural silk; the number can be checked on silkmarkindia.com. It is voluntary, so its absence does not prove a fake.
  • Handloom Mark - a Ministry of Textiles scheme from 2006 certifying that a product is handwoven, with a QR-coded label. It confirms origin, not quality. Regulations to make it mandatory for anything sold as 'handloom' were notified to the WTO in March 2026; check whether they are in force.
  • GI logo - a registered logo for Banaras Brocades and Sarees, used by registered authorised users. Ask the seller for their GI authorised-user certificate.
  • Woven QR code - some handloom weavers weave a QR code into the plain end of the saree (a technique from IIT-BHU) that can carry the GI, Silk Mark and Handloom Mark details.

Silk or art silk: pure silk feels soft and warms in the hand. The burn test is often suggested - pull one thread from the edge, not the saree. Silk smoulders, smells like burning hair and leaves ash that crushes to powder; polyester melts into a hard bead; viscose flares and burns like paper. Some newer fakes reportedly pass it, so treat it as a hint.

Where to buy Banarasi sarees in Varanasi

kashidwar.com does not recommend individual shops. These are the main areas where sarees are sold:

  • Deendayal Hastkala Sankul, Bada Lalpur - the Ministry of Textiles' trade facilitation centre for handloom and handicraft, opened in 2017. It has about 50 retail marts and a crafts museum with handloom galleries.
  • Chowk lanes - the old wholesale saree mandis around Kunj Gali, Rani Kuan, Golghar and Sati Chautara, with roughly 1,500 shops, many run by wholesale manufacturers (gaddidars).
  • Thatheri Bazaar - an old market lane with sarees, shawls and dress material.
  • Godowlia and Vishwanath Gali - busy lanes near Kashi Vishwanath with saree and dupatta shops across price levels; prices here can be geared to visitors.

Visiting weaving areas respectfully

Weaving happens in homes and small workshops in residential mohallas. The GI filing places satin-based work in north Varanasi (Badi Bazar, Alaipura, Peeli Kothi) and organza work in the south, such as Madanpura; other GI-area localities include Lallapura, Sarai Mohana, Bajardiha and Lohta. There is no formal visitor circuit, so go with someone the family knows, a weavers' cooperative or an organised craft walk.

A loom is a family's workplace. Ask before photographing people or designs, do not touch the warp and keep visits short. If a weaver spends time explaining the work, buying something or paying for the visit is fair.

Avoiding commission touts

Auto and taxi drivers, unlicensed guides and strangers in the lanes may offer to take you to a 'government-approved' or 'factory' silk shop. They earn a commission on what you buy, which is added to your price, and some of these shops sell powerloom or synthetic sarees as handwoven silk.

Care and storage

Dry-clean silk Banarasis; do not machine-wash them. Air the saree in shade after wearing, then wrap it in plain cotton or muslin and store it somewhere cool, dark and dry - not in plastic, which traps moisture and can yellow silk and zari.

Refold along different lines every few months so the zari does not crack at the creases and spray perfume before dressing, not on the fabric. Neem leaves or silica gel help against insects and damp.

How do I identify an original Banarasi saree?

What is katan silk?

Katan is pure mulberry silk yarn made by twisting two threads together, used in both warp and weft. A katan Banarasi is soft, lustrous and strong enough to carry heavy zari.
