Getting there from Delhi: train or flight
The cheapest way in is an overnight train. The Shiv Ganga Express (12560) from New Delhi reaches Banaras station the next morning; listed fares are about ₹385 in Sleeper, ₹1,060 in 3AC and ₹1,530 in 2AC (approximate, from a railway blog; the IRCTC fare at booking is final).
The New Delhi–Varanasi Vande Bharat (22436) takes about 8 hours by day. Its launch fares were ₹1,760 for Chair Car and ₹3,310 for Executive, catering included; current fares are a little higher, so treat these as a floor and check IRCTC.
Direct flights take about 1 hour 25 minutes. In October 2026 ixigo lists direct one-way fares of ₹5,600–6,200, with December and January fares from about ₹5,570; Expedia shows one-way fares from ₹3,069 on off-peak dates. A realistic planning band is ₹3,000–6,500 one way.

A prepaid auto from Varanasi Junction (Cantt) to Godowlia costs about ₹100–150. Autos stop at Godowlia crossing; the ghats are a short walk from there. Shared e-rickshaws charge ₹10–50 a seat, and a typical hop such as Godowlia to Kal Bhairav is ₹30–40 per person on a normal day. Ola runs on main roads but cannot enter the old lanes.
Sarnath is about 10 km north. City bus 107E from near Cantt station costs about ₹25, buses marked Sarnath from Lanka ₹20–30, and an auto about ₹400 one way or ₹700 return with an hour's wait (approximate, 2023 figure). A private auto from the airport to Sarnath is ₹300–500.
Boats are negotiated on the ghat. A seat in a shared rowboat is ₹80–150 at sunrise and ₹200–300 at aarti time; a private rowboat is about ₹400–500 an hour, rising to ₹1,500 for motorboats or on busy evenings. On New Year's Eve 2025, boats normally at ₹200 were charging ₹1,000, which shows the festival range.
The Cantt–Godowlia ropeway is not yet open. The notified fare is ₹10 per station, ₹50 for the full Cantt–Godowlia run, 20% off with the Kashi Smart Pass, rising 5% every April. Testing is under way and the opening is scheduled for 24 November 2026; until then, plan on an auto.

Ways to spend less
Take the sunrise boat, not the aarti boat: the same seat costs half as much and the river is quieter. Watch the aarti from the steps, which is free. Agree the boat price and duration before stepping in, and pay at the end.
Use the prepaid auto counter at Cantt station and shared e-rickshaws in town. For Sarnath, bus 107E or a Lanka bus costs under ₹30 against ₹400 by auto. Stay near Assi for lower room rates, and avoid Dev Deepawali week unless the festival is the reason for the trip.
- Sunrise shared boat instead of aarti boat: saves ₹100–150
- Aarti from the ghat steps: free
- Bus to Sarnath instead of auto: saves about ₹350
- Room near Assi instead of Dashashwamedh: 20–40% cheaper
- General darshan instead of Sugam: saves ₹250–300
